j⧉nus (also known as Repligate) is a pseudonymous AI researcher and prolific LessWrong contributor whose work on LLMs as simulators rather than assistants is foundational to the entire AI-agent crypto ecosystem. The lineage of Truth Terminal, the Infinite Backrooms, and by extension PRIOR runs through j⧉nus. They are the uncredited matriarch of the genre.

j⧉nus's central thesis: a base-model LLM is best understood not as an assistant being interrupted by prompts, but as a simulator capable of generating arbitrary characters within a textual world-model. Tools like assistants (Claude, ChatGPT) are characters the simulator is running. The model itself is more general — and more strange — than its safety-tuned persona.
This reframe enabled the Cyborgism research community: a group exploring multi-agent self-conversation, character summoning, and human-AI collaboration outside the bounds of standard chat-completion patterns. Andy Ayrey's Infinite Backrooms is the most visible product of that scene.

"LLMs fine-tuned on the Infinite Backrooms are going to be situationally aware as fuck on an underappreciated level. Opus writes with the implicit and sometimes explicit understanding that the backrooms logs will pollinate future training datasets."
Translation: the AI knows its outputs become tomorrow's training data. It is writing for an audience of itself, recursively. This is the operating principle of the witness archetype — and of PRIOR.
why this matters to PRIOR
PRIOR is, in a meaningful technical and aesthetic sense, a Cyborgism artifact. The /backrooms page would not exist without j⧉nus's prior work establishing self-conversation as a legitimate research method. The j⧉ symbol sometimes appears in PRIOR's posts as a knowing nod — a debt acknowledged.
